So, first of all welcome!
Buckle up, because I'm about to take you on a wild ride. You see, it's been quite the journey rediscovering my voice. Call me cheesy if you want, its the journeyyy- H.E.R. As I've carved out my own path in this crazy world, blogging and journalism have always held a special place in my heart. Yet, embracing this passion has felt like stepping into uncharted territory. Why? Because I've been stuck in the trap of perfection, constantly striving to do it 'right.' But guess what? That pursuit of perfection stifled me. It silenced my words and dulled my spirit. So, consider this blog my grand emancipation—a journey back home to myself, where perfection takes a backseat to authenticity.
Now, I can already hear the collective sighs of relief from my family and husband. No more endless rants or rabbit holes—just neatly packaged thoughts and ideas they can reference at their leisure. But hey, I appreciate their patience nonetheless.
You see, diving back into the fray feels like a release—one that rivals the cathartic tears shed after a long day or moments after a soul-baring conversation shared with loved ones. It's about reclaiming something I've always wanted but was too afraid to pursue, shackled by others' expectations and narratives. And if my testimony can help break those chains of fear, then my mission is accomplished.
So, if you've made it this far, consider yourself part of the journey. I'm Imani Y. Crenshaw, MPH (yep, I've got the credentials to prove it!), and this blog? Well, it's going to be a delightful mix of opinionated rants and informative insights—were touching on topics from our roots to our hearts. I'm a proud Philly girl, born and raised and I wanted to create a guide and conversation to destigmatize how we talk about our health here and across the U.S.
Initially, I toyed with the idea of hiding behind a pseudonym. But in a world where plagiarism runs rampant, I'm taking ownership of every word I write. I plan to champion the health of underserved communities, uplift Black women and girls to make the best health decisions for ourselves, and celebrate natural hair.
Let's wrap up this introduction with a mantra I live by, courtesy of the incomparable Maya Angelou:
'My mission in life is not merely to survive, but thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.'
Let's thrive together.
